The Scrunchy Back to
School Germ Guide

Simple, natural ways to support your kids through germ season — from the first day of school to the first sniffle.

🎒 Back to School Edition · By Ashley Baker

Every fall, the backpacks go on and the sniffles follow. But illness isn't inevitable — it's manageable when you're prepared. These are the tips I actually use with my 7 kids every single August. No fear, no perfection, just practical scrunchy support for the school year ahead.

Handwashing — Still #1
The Real First Defense
1

Soap and water beats hand sanitizer

Plain soap and water removes germs mechanically — it doesn't need to kill them. Hand sanitizer is useful on the go but doesn't remove dirt, debris, or certain pathogens like norovirus nearly as well as proper handwashing.

2

Skip the antibacterial soap

Triclosan and other antibacterial agents in soaps are endocrine disruptors and contribute to antibiotic resistance. Regular soap works just as well — and doesn't come with the downsides.

3

Make it a habit, not a punishment

Hands before eating, after the bathroom, when they get home from school. Keep it simple and consistent — kids do what becomes routine, not what becomes a battle.

Mom Hack

Keep a castile soap foamer at the sink — kids are way more likely to wash hands when there are bubbles involved. Add a few drops of lavender or lemon essential oil for a natural antimicrobial boost.

Building Immunity Before the Germs Hit
Daily Supplements · Gut Health · Sleep

💊 Daily Immune Stack

  • Vitamin D3 — critical for immune response
  • Vitamin C — antioxidant, supports white blood cells
  • Zinc — antiviral, reduces duration of illness
  • Elderberry — antiviral support, works best preventively
  • Probiotics — 70% of immune system lives in the gut

😴 Sleep = Immunity

  • School-age kids need 9–11 hours
  • Growth hormone and immune repair happen at night
  • A child running on less sleep gets sick more often — full stop
  • Consistent bedtime is the most underrated immunity tool

Gut health is immune health. If your child has had antibiotics, their gut flora needs rebuilding. Prioritize probiotic-rich foods (yogurt, kefir, fermented foods) and limit processed sugars that feed bad bacteria. A healthy gut microbiome is one of the best defenses against getting sick.

After-School Decompression
The Transition Period · Nervous System Support
1

Why kids fall apart after school — and that's okay

Many kids hold it together all day at school and then release everything the moment they get home. This is called after-school restraint collapse, and it's completely normal. They saved their big feelings for the person they feel safest with — you. It's not defiance. It's trust.

2

Protect the first 20 minutes

Don't bombard them with questions, homework, or tasks the second they walk in. Give them a snack, some quiet, and space. Let them decompress before re-engaging. Their nervous system needs it — and so does yours.

3

Connection before correction

If they're struggling — emotionally, behaviorally, or physically — ask yourself when they last had calm connected time with you. So much "behavior" is a bid for connection. Meeting that need first makes everything else easier.

Scrunchy Tip

A magnesium bath after school is magic for dysregulated kids. Epsom salt or magnesium flakes in warm water calms the nervous system, helps with mood, and supports sleep. 15–20 minutes, a few times a week.

First Sign of Illness — What to Do
Natural First Response · When to Rest · When to Call
