Flu season, holiday sugar, cold weather immunity — how to keep your family well and thriving all winter long.

A note from Ashley

Winter used to feel like a season I just had to survive. Someone was always sick, the holidays were exhausting, and by January we were all running on empty.

Now I approach winter completely differently. The cold and dark actually invite us to slow down — and when we do, our bodies heal better, sleep better, and fight off illness better.

The holidays don't have to mean sick kids. Yes, there will be treats and sugar and late nights — but we can navigate all of it with intention, not restriction. This guide is how we do it in our house of seven.

Winter Immune Stack — The Daily Basics

Winter immune support isn't complicated — it's consistent. Keep these going all season long:

  • Vitamin D3 — we get almost none from the sun in winter. Non-negotiable for the whole family.
  • Elderberry — daily for prevention; increase to therapeutic dose at first sign of illness
  • Zinc — critical for fighting viral infections
  • Probiotics — gut-immune connection is strongest in winter when we eat heavier foods
  • Vitamin C — increase during high-exposure times (holidays, travel, school events)
💡 Keep everything in one basket or cabinet so the routine is automatic — not a treasure hunt every morning.

First Sign of Illness Protocol

The 12–24 hours after first symptoms are your most powerful intervention window. Move fast:

  • Elderberry — increase to every 2–3 hours for the first 24 hours
  • Oscillococcinum — homeopathic, at first sign of flu-like symptoms, every 6 hours for 3 doses
  • Vitamin C — increase significantly; bowel tolerance is your guide
  • Zinc lozenges — if they have a sore throat or it's hitting the upper respiratory system
  • Rest — cancel what you can. Sleep is when healing happens.
  • Warm broth and liquids — hydration is everything when fighting illness
💡 Stock your sick kit in October so you're not scrambling in December. When everyone else is at the pharmacy at midnight, you'll already have what you need.

Indoor Air & Home Environment

We spend so much more time inside in winter — air quality matters a lot more than most families realize:

  • HEPA air purifier — in bedrooms, especially if anyone has respiratory issues
  • Humidifier — heated winter air is dry; dry mucous membranes are more vulnerable to viruses
  • Open windows briefly — even in winter, 10–15 minutes of air exchange makes a difference
  • Non-toxic cleaning — swap to Branch Basics or similar; harsh chemicals irritate airways already stressed by illness
  • Diffuse eucalyptus or thieves oil — not just smells good; genuinely supports respiratory health

Nourishment Through the Cold Months

Winter is the season to lean into warming, gut-supportive foods:

  • Bone broth — make it a weekly ritual; sip it plain or use as soup base
  • Fermented foods — sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt; feed the gut through the holidays
  • Garlic, ginger, turmeric — cook them into everything. Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, warming.
  • Limit sugar — harder in winter with all the holiday treats, but immune suppression from excess sugar is real
  • Warm lemon water — first thing in the morning; hydrating, vitamin C, alkalizing
😴

Sleep & Magnesium in Winter

Winter is actually your body's natural invitation to rest more — lean into it rather than fighting it. Shorter days, longer nights, slower pace. Practically:

  • Magnesium glycinate before bed — helps kids (and adults) fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply
  • Protect bedtime even more during holiday season when schedules get chaotic
  • Dim lights an hour before bed — winter darkness is an asset if you use it
  • Keep sick kids home and resting rather than pushing through — one sick day often prevents five
💡 A rested family is a resilient family. Sleep is the most underrated immune support tool there is.
