Every fall, the backpacks go on — and the sniffles follow. Back to school is one of the biggest germ exposures of the year, and it's not just the germs we need to prepare for.
It's also the transition. New schedules, earlier wake-ups, more sitting, more social pressure. Kids' bodies and nervous systems are working overtime — and that alone can wear down their immunity.
Give them grace. Give yourself grace too. And give their immune systems the support they need to handle what's coming.
This guide is everything I reach for in our house every August and September — simple, real, and rooted in what actually works.
Handwashing the Right Way
Handwashing is still your single best defense against back-to-school germs — but most kids do it wrong. Teach them to wash for a full 20 seconds (sing Happy Birthday twice), get under the nails, and rinse well. Skip the antibacterial soap — regular soap works just as well and doesn't disrupt the skin microbiome. Keep a small bottle of castile soap in their backpack for situations where the school soap is rough.
Building Immunity Before the Germs Hit
Start your supplement routine 2–3 weeks before school begins — don't wait until the first sniffle. The basics that actually move the needle:
- Vitamin D3 — most kids are deficient, especially heading into fall. 1,000–2,000 IU daily for school-age kids (check with your provider for toddlers).
- Elderberry syrup — daily for prevention, not just when sick. Look for brands with no added sugar.
- Zinc — critical for immune function. A good kids' multi usually covers this.
- Probiotics — 70% of the immune system lives in the gut. A daily probiotic is one of the highest-leverage things you can do.
- Vitamin C — food sources first (bell peppers, kiwi, strawberries), then supplement if needed.
After-School Decompression
Kids who "fall apart" after school aren't being difficult — they've been holding it together all day and they're finally safe enough to let go. This is called the "after-school restraint collapse" and it's completely normal. What helps:
- A snack waiting when they walk in the door (blood sugar crashes make everything worse)
- 20–30 minutes of unstructured time before homework or activities
- Outside time if at all possible — sunlight and movement reset the nervous system
- Keep conversation light — no interrogating about their day right away
A regulated nervous system is a more resilient immune system. These aren't separate things.
First Sign of Illness — What to Do
The window between "something's off" and "full-blown sick" is your most powerful intervention point. When you notice the first signs — glassy eyes, clingy behavior, a scratchy voice, low energy — start immediately:
- Elderberry — increase to therapeutic dose (check your brand's label)
- Oscillococcinum — homeopathic pellets at first sign of flu-like symptoms, every 6 hours
- Vitamin C — increase significantly at first sign
- Rest — pull back on activities if you can. Sleep is when the immune system does its best work.
- Warm liquids — broth, herbal tea with honey (over 1 year), warm lemon water
Sleep, Stress & the Immune Connection
Sleep deprivation is one of the fastest ways to tank immunity — and the back-to-school schedule shift is brutal. Kids who were staying up late all summer suddenly need to be up an hour or two earlier. Give it two full weeks to adjust, and in the meantime:
- Move bedtime 15 minutes earlier every few days rather than cold turkey
- Cut screens an hour before bed — the blue light delays melatonin
- Magnesium glycinate is a game-changer for kids who struggle to wind down (and for moms too)
- A simple, calm bedtime routine matters more than any supplement
And don't forget yourself, mama. Your immune system runs on sleep too, and a sick mom can't care for sick kids.
